In the early morning of August 26th, flash floods hit the Himalayan valleys bordering Nepal and China, leaving a devastating number of people missing or dead. The glacier lies within Langtang National Park in Nepal, directly below Langtang Lirung, one of the highest peaks in the region.

It is estimated that the collapse generated a magnitude 5.2 seismic signal that travelled to the Bhote Koshi valleys and the Trishuli River, carrying large volumes of sediment and water at 193 km/h over its first 22 km, leaving little time for adequate warnings to those who were affected.

Some scientists believe the reason for the collapse is linked to climate change and the gradual melting of ice masses.

According to the reports, the death toll reached 903, with continuous identification and rescue efforts ongoing. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority stated that over 3,000 people are missing and 9,435 people have been rescued from flood-hit areas so far.

Nepal is now in its third straight year of catastrophic flooding. Kathmandu flooded in September 2024 after heavy rains gave residents almost no time to react. In May 2025, a supraglacial lake outburst tore through cross-border infrastructure. By July that year, monsoon rain combined with a likely glacial lake outburst to strike again.

The pattern is no longer unusual, it’s establishing itself as the norm. Each year brings the same toll: thousands of homes destroyed, families separated, lives lost. And each year, the flooding has hit harder than the last, with rescue operations and mass displacement now a recurring feature rather than an exception.

The 2024 floods were not directly related to climate change risks but exposed the vulnerability of Valleys in Kathmandu. It showed signs that there need to be systemic changes in policy, enforcement and disaster risk management.

However, the following two years saw more severe damage with no major changes to the glacial hazard monitoring system. As of now, the measures taken were mainly humanitarian rather than prevention-oriented.

On 26 August, the Nepali government turned down offers from countries willing to send rescue teams and financial aid, including cash contributions through the Prime Minister Relief Fund.

When the situation evolved into a disaster on August 29, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said that Nepal seeks targeted technical support based on its needs. The government has also asked international agencies and governments to provide equipment for body preservation and heavy-lift cargo drones for relief supply delivery.

India has provided support through a rescue and disaster-specialised team, forensic experts for DNA analysis and consignments of essential support supplies.

The finance minister estimated reconstruction costs at USD 4 billion to USD 5 billion. When set against Nepal’s USD 45 billion GDP, this makes it one of the costliest natural disasters and would strain the economy.

The path forward depends on securing enough recovery funds, but the broader question of building cooperative mechanisms for data sharing, communication, and early warning systems persists.
