Behind the handshakes, Iran’s partnerships with Russia and China have moved into harder territory: missile engineering on one side, open defiance of US sanctions on the other.

The support came from Russia with flawless timing during the SCO Summit. The very next day, the US launched Operation Economic Outcast to damage Iran’s economy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that they will give Iran “the assistance you need” and “the necessary goods” during “this difficult period.”

China framed its support as a defence of international law. “China was firmly opposed to what it called ‘illegal unilateral sanctions’ and would take ‘all necessary measures’ to safeguard its rights,” said Lin Jian, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

A leaked record assessed by the Financial Times finds that Russia provides military technology. The most reviewed is the ramjet.

A ramjet is a type of jet engine that lets a cruise missile fly at supersonic speeds, combined with low-altitude flight. These features make it extremely difficult for defence systems to detect and intercept it in time.

The building of this prototype has been a secret collaboration since 2023. The rarity and power of this technology make it a huge threat to U.S. defences, but at present, it has not been deployed.

Russia has also backed Iran with intelligence and drone components since the war began.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked and told Vladimir Putin, “We can resist US unilateralism.” He added, “We can find ways to circumvent them; within frameworks like the SCO and other organisations, we can bypass unilateral measures and cooperate on a multilateral basis.”

The U.S. announced its plan to widen economic sanctions to the countries that are trading partners with Iran. China is an important trade partner of Iran and the biggest importer of Iranian oil.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman stated that “Cooperation between China and Iran has always been conducted within the framework of international law and should not be interfered with or disrupted.”

The shift from diplomatic alliance to economic and military support is advantageous to Iran. The US calculations on warfare and economic pressure will be reassessed with new information, considering the limited effectiveness of Operation Economic Outcast and the growing military threat.

“Nothing that anyone is providing Iran is in any way impeding our ability to act as necessary to protect the United States,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News.

Iran with the support of Russia and China, has become less vulnerable to both economic and military pressure. It creates a counterbalance and puts up a united front against Western influence.
